George Sumrall and Betty (née Chandler) Sumrall welcomed Sumrall into the world on February 15, 1913, in New Orleans, Louisiana. After recovering from illness, he started preaching at the age of 17. He was ordained by the Assemblies of God and established a church in Green Forest, Arkansas, when he was just 19 years old.

Sumrall started doing international trips in 1934. He founded a church in Brisbane, Australia, and preached in Tahiti and New Zealand. He and Howard Carter traversed Europe and eastern Asia. Sumrall met Louise Layman in South America. After getting married on September 30, 1944, the couple had three kids: Peter Andrew (1953–2015), Phillip Stephen (1950), and Frank Lester (1946–2024).
