Toufik Benedictus “Benny” Hinn, a Palestinian-American-Canadian televangelist who was born in Israel on December 3, 1952, is most known for his frequent “Miracle Crusades”—revival meetings or faith-healing summits that are typically held in stadiums in major cities and are subsequently televised globally on his television show, This Is Your Day.
Hinn was born in 1952 in Jaffa, in the then-new state of Israel, to parents of Greek, Palestinian, and Armenian descent who were born in Palestine. He was baptized by the Jerusalem patriarch and brought up in the Eastern Orthodox church.
Hinn’s family moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, shortly after the 1967 Arab–Israeli War (also known as “The Six-Day War”), and he went to Georges Vanier Secondary School there in 1968. He didn’t receive his degree. In his writings, Hinn makes up stories about how he was a first-class student, socially isolated as a youngster, stuttering, and that his father was the mayor of Jaffa when he was born.
He declared himself a born-again Christian in 1972. He took a charter bus from Toronto to Pittsburgh on December 21, 1973, to attend a “miracle service” led by evangelist Kathryn Kuhlman, according to Hinn’s writing.
He frequently went to her “healing services” and has frequently mentioned her as an influence in his life, despite the fact that he has never met her in person. He claimed to have been cured of his stuttering when he was asked to share his spiritual experience at Trinity Pentecostal Church in Oshawa in 1974.
