About Mykhailo Mudryk
Mykhailo Mudryk is a Ukrainian professional football player who plays as a winger for Chelsea of the Premier League and the Ukrainian national team. He was born on January 5, 2001. Due to a positive doping test, he is now on a provisional suspension from football.
Before relocating to Shakhtar Donetsk in 2016, Mudryk started his career in the Metalist Kharkiv and Dnipro academies. After making his professional debut two years later, he went on loan to Desna Chernihiv and Arsenal Kyiv. After a €70 million (£62 million) transfer to English club Chelsea in 2023, he became the most expensive Ukrainian football player and the most expensive player to be signed from the Ukrainian Premier League.
After playing at several youth levels, Mudryk has been a member of the Ukrainian national team since 2022 and was a member of the team at UEFA Euro 2024.
Early Life
On January 5, 2001, Mykhailo Mudryk was born in Berestyn, Kharkiv Oblast. He is an Orthodox Christian who has freely discussed the significance of faith to him, as demonstrated by his grandmother, and who regularly brings religious symbols to matches. Although Mudryk has other tattoos, he views the one that says “Only Jesus” as the most significant. The nickname “Misha” is what his friends and coaches call him.
Club Career
Before transferring to Dnipro’s academy in 2014, Mudryk started playing football at Metalist Kharkiv in 2010. Mudryk caught Shakhtar Donetsk’s attention after rapidly moving up through the age divisions, and in 2016 he joined the team’s academy.
Shakhtar Donetsk
He represented Shakhtar in the under-21 division during the 2018–19 campaign. Later that year, Mudryk was promoted to the first team. On October 31, 2018, at the age of 17, he made his first-team debut in a Ukrainian Cup match against Olimpik Donetsk, which Shakhtar won 1-0.
He struggled to receive playing time and was loaned to Arsenal Kyiv of the Ukrainian Premier League in February 2019 for the rest of the 2018–19 campaign, where he played 10 games but failed to score any goals. He helped the Ukrainian Premier League win the 2019–20 season by playing against Desna Chernihiv, Kolos Kovalivka, and Oleksandriya. He qualified for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League in the summer of 2020 and signed a loan deal with Desna Chernihiv of the Ukrainian Premier League. He played ten games in the 2020–21 Ukrainian Premier League and one in the 2020–21 Ukrainian Cup during his four months in Chernihiv.
After returning to Shakhtar on January 8, 2021, Mudryk played three games in the 2020–21 Ukrainian Premier League and joined the team’s reserve squad, making occasional appearances for manager Luís Castro.
Mudryk gained more and more playing time in the 2021–22 campaign, particularly after Roberto De Zerbi took over as Shakhtar’s manager. De Zerbi was known for believing in young players. De Zerbi made the decision to recall Mudryk from his loan term because his previous managers were unable to bring out the best in him and asked to meet with him. Following the meeting, Mudryk changed his mindset, and his manager said that “if I don’t bring him to a high level, I will consider it a personal defeat” and regarded him as one of the best young players.
Chelsea
On January 15, 2023, Mudryk agreed to an eight-and-a-half-year contract with Chelsea of the Premier League for an initial transfer fee of €70 million (£62 million), with the possibility of additional fees of up to €100 million (£89 million). Shakhtar became the most expensive Ukrainian football player with this transfer price, which was the highest ever obtained by the Ukrainian Premier League and broke the previous record held by Fred.
On January 21, Mudryk made his debut when Chelsea and Liverpool drew 0-0 on the road in a league game. In a 0-0 draw with Fulham on February 4, he made his debut. In a 2-0 Premier League victory over Fulham on October 2, Mudryk opened the scoring with his first goal for Chelsea in his 24th game. In a 2-2 draw with Arsenal on October 21, he scored his first goal at Stamford Bridge from a long-range attempt. In an EFL Cup match against Newcastle United on December 19, 2023, Chelsea won on penalties after Mudryk’s equalizer in stoppage time helped his team to a 1-1 draw.
Mykhailo Mudryk Suspension
It was announced on December 17, 2024, that Mudryk had been provisionally suspended by the FA following a positive doping test. Mudryk no longer has a specific squad number with Chelsea after Cole Palmer received his number 10 shirt on June 5, 2025. The FA accused him of breaking anti-doping regulations later that month, on June 18, and he may be banned for four years.
International Career
Mudryk was a player for the Ukraine U17 from 2017 to 2018. He participated in 12 games and scored five goals for the Ukraine U19 team between 2018 and 2019. He made his Ukraine U21 debut in 2019, making 16 appearances and scoring three goals. He scored the game-winning free kick against Armenia on September 7, 2021. Mudryk rejoined the Ukraine U21 team for the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship on June 16, 2023. During the competition, he made two starts and contributed two assists.
Mudryk was selected for the Ukraine national team’s April–May 2022 training camp in Slovenia in April of that year. He made his debut in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff semifinals on June 1st, when Ukraine defeated Scotland 3-1.
In a 3-1 victory over Malta in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match on October 17, 2023, Mudryk scored his first goal as a senior international. He scored the game-winning goal to advance Ukraine to the official tournament on March 26, 2024, as they defeated Iceland 2-1 in the qualification play-off final.
Reception
His Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana asserted that Mudryk is faster than Kylian Mbappe and most likely the fastest player he has faced. The statement “With Mudryk, I see endless bags of potential that hasn’t been fulfilled yet” was Ben Chilwell’s cautious compliment. Some Chelsea supporters dubbed him “Ukraine Bolt” (a wordplay referencing Usain Bolt) in reference to his subpar on-field performances, implying that his speed is his sole strength.
