Early Life
Born in 1952 in Jaffa, Israel, Toufik Benedictus Hinn was the son of Greek, Palestinian, and Armenian parents. Hinn grew up in an Eastern Orthodox household. He claimed to have become a born-again Christian in 1972 after his family moved to Toronto, Canada, in 1968.
He attributes the inspiration for his own ministry to attending a “miracle service” conducted by evangelist Kathryn Kuhlman in 1973, which was a turning point in his spiritual development.
Birth of Ministry
After establishing the Orlando Christian Center in 1983, Hinn’s ministry flourished throughout the US. Hinn became well-known throughout the world for his “Miracle Crusades,” which were massive faith healing gatherings that took place in stadiums all over the world.
His reach was further expanded via his television show, “This Is Your Day,” which transmitted purported lessons and miracles to a worldwide audience.
Allegations
Although Hinn’s ministry has attracted a devoted following, it has also been the focus of intense criticism and controversy. His lavish lifestyle, the truthfulness of his medical claims, and his financial practices have all drawn criticism.
Allegations of extravagant spending and financial mismanagement have been made against Hinn’s ministry. Critics claim that his extravagant lifestyle, which includes pricey real estate and private jets, runs counter to his teachings of service and humility. In 2007, Hinn was one of numerous televangelists whose financial affairs were investigated by the US Senate.
The inquiry brought into question the ministry’s financial transparency and the use of donations for personal gain, even though no charges were brought.
Family Division
Hinn’s family has been under public scrutiny in recent years. Costi Hinn, his nephew, has openly criticized his uncle’s prosperity gospel and teachings, accusing him of deceptive promises and financial exploitation.
Hinn’s reputation has been further damaged by Costi’s disclosures, which have also revealed the conflicts within his family.
