Joshua Bassey, a trumpeter and minister in The Apostolic Church, Bashua Assembly, played a pivotal role in shaping Nathaniel’s musical inclinations. Elder Bassey nurtured his son’s love for music and the gospel, encouraging him to pursue excellence in music, even suggesting it as an alternative to engineering, his initial career aspiration.

He introduced Nathaniel to the sounds of highlife music, particularly the legendary Jim Rex Lawson, fostering an appreciation for rhythm and melody. The influence of Dr. Panam Percy Paul, a prominent Nigerian gospel music icon, also left a lasting impression on young Nathaniel, further fueling his passion for music.

Jazz Beginnings

Nathaniel’s early musical interests leaned towards jazz. He immersed himself in the works of jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Kirk Whalum, Phil Driscoll, and Hugh Masekela, studying their techniques and developing his own unique style. This fascination with jazz led him to join Spectrum 4, a leading jazz quartet in Lagos, where he played alongside childhood friends. His talent soon caught the attention of Elder Steve Rhodes, a respected figure in the Nigerian jazz scene, who invited him to lead the Steve Rhodes Orchestra, arguably the first jazz orchestra in Nigeria.

For two years, Nathaniel served as band leader and lead trumpet player, gaining invaluable experience and recognition. His distinctive, soulful trumpet playing became sought after by top artists and composers, leading to collaborations with Teemac, Ayo Bankole Jr, Cobhams Asuquo, Wole Oni, Yinka Davies, Adlan Cruise, Funsho Ogundipe, Peter King, Sotiris Papadopoulus, Paul Petersen, The French Cultural Centre, and the American International School.

Education and Ministry

Nathaniel Bassey is a graduate of Politics and International Relations from the University of London. He has also pursued formal music training, including courses at the Middlesex University Summer School in the UK, where he studied popular music and music business. He serves as the director of music at The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG); The King’s Court, further demonstrating his commitment to serving the church through his musical gifts.
