Books on Role of the Holy Spirit Today PDF. The presence of the Holy Spirit is the greatest gift that God has given to humanity. The Spirit is multifaceted, playing a variety of roles. Initially, He works in everyone’s heart, everywhere. To “convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment,” Jesus promised His disciples that He would send the Spirit into the world (John 16:8, NASB). All people possess a “God consciousness,” whether they acknowledge it or not. God’s truths are applied to people’s thoughts by the Spirit to persuade them that they are sinners through reasonable and convincing arguments. We can be saved by acting upon that conviction.
Following our salvation and adoption as God’s children, the Spirit permanently resides in our hearts, sealing us with the guarantee, certification, and confirmation of our eternal status. It was Jesus who promised to send the Spirit to be our Counselor, Comforter, and Helper. According to John 14:16, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.” The Greek word “counselor,” as it is rendered here, means “one who is called alongside,” connoting a supportive and admonishing person. Believers’ hearts become permanently inhabited by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20; 12:13). To “make up” for His departure, Jesus gave us the Spirit to carry out the tasks that He would have done directly for us if He had been with us.
