A church in Seattle has raised almost $70,000 for the family of a cherished member who was sadly killed in a recent shooting.
Police in South Seattle think that the July 30 shooting death of 38-year-old Jonathan Miles was a deliberate act of violence. He had been a longstanding member of New Hope Fellowship Church, where he was well-known for his generosity, involvement in the church’s youth mentoring program, and community service.
The congregation and the neighborhood were rocked by the news of his passing. Church leaders responded by starting an urgent fundraising campaign to help Miles’ wife and their two young children, who are currently dealing with the financial and emotional fallout from the tragedy.
“We are heartbroken,” said Pastor Elaine Robertson, of New Hope. “Jonathan was a light in this community. We knew we had to do something to support his family, and the response has been overwhelming.”
In only five days, the congregation earned almost $70,000 with the help of local businesses, neighbors, and online supporters from all around the nation. The money will be used to aid with funeral costs, support the family financially, and create a small trust for Miles’ kids.
Hundreds of people attended a memorial service over the weekend, many of them dressed in white as a sign of harmony and peace. A guy who was devoted to his faith, family, and community was depicted via the heartfelt remembrances of his loved ones, friends, and church leaders.
In a statement, Seattle Mayor Rachel Evans expressed her condolences and praised the community’s reaction:
“While we mourn the loss of Jonathan Miles, we are inspired by the love and unity his community has shown in the face of tragedy. This is what Seattle is about—showing up for each other.”
The shooting is still being looked into by Seattle Police. Authorities are asking anyone with knowledge to get in touch with them, as no arrests have been made.
