Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington made a stunning critique of cancel culture and the idolization of celebrity fan bases in an open and spiritually charged interview, stating that his ultimate loyalty is to God.
The 70-year-old Hollywood legend, who is presently promoting Highest 2 Lowest with director Spike Lee, resisted the idea that having “followers” on social media means having influence or approval.
“You can’t lead and follow at the same time, and you can’t follow and lead at the same time. I don’t follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don’t follow man,” Denzel Washington stated.
“You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up.”
Washington’s response to the interviewer’s suggestion that followers are now currency was;
“I don’t care who’s following who.”
“What made public support so important to begin with. Who cares?
“You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up. Don’t sign up.”
He was baptized and licensed as a pastor at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem just before turning 70, which was a very touching turning point in his spiritual development.
