Ambassador Muhammad Isa Umaru, the Emir of Kano, has outlawed religious services in residential structures throughout the emirate. Following a series of citizen petitions and an investigation by a special committee constituted by the Emir, this judgment was made.
Christians can freely worship at Kano’s 27 legally registered churches, but the increasing trend of having services in private homes has strained relations among communities and resulted in formal complaints.
The Emir issued an order to immediately stop all church-related activities in residential structures in order to preserve peace and order after the committee’s findings. The action is intended to allay locals’ worries about unpermitted religious gatherings.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Kano chapter has not yet made any public remarks regarding the prohibition. This comes after the Emir of Kano recently imposed a similar prohibition on church-related events.
