Prominent Nigerian televangelist Apostle Gideon Odoma gave a stirring speech about the growing anxiety surrounding “Lapo Nepo” culture and how it contributes to an emotionally warped view of life on the internet.
In a post on his X page, the cleric warned readers of the tendency to cultivate social media stars whose notoriety is bolstered more by nepotistic connections (“Lapo Nepo”) than by true ability or accomplishment.
According to him, this phenomenon produces a false sense of achievement, a mirage that obscures the effort, adversity, and genuineness that characterize real life.
“A lot of what you see online—luxury, popularity, fame—is often just a curated show,” he emphasized.
“Social media is great for connection, but it can also trap people in a lie… chasing an image, a façade.”
Apostle Gideon Odoma went on to say that this culture can cause disappointment, annoyance, and disillusionment, particularly in young, impressionable users, by fostering unhealthy comparisons and unreasonable expectations.
