Books by Charles Finney are here for you to go and buy. Charles Grandison Finney was a contentious American Presbyterian clergyman who led the country’s Second Great Awakening from August 29, 1792, until August 16, 1875. The term “Father of Old Revivalism” has been applied to him. A large portion of conventional Reformed theology was rejected by Finney.
From 1825 until 1835, Finney was a fervent revivalist preacher in Manhattan and Upstate New York’s Burned-over District. He was also a religious writer, an opponent of Old School Presbyterian theology, and a supporter of Christian perfectionism.
Because of his theological beliefs, he and a number of other evangelical leaders advocated for social reforms like abolitionism and equal educational opportunities for women and African Americans. He began teaching at Oberlin College in Ohio in 1835, which admitted students of all s*xes and races. The faculty and students were abolitionists, supporters of the Underground Railroad, and advocates for universal education. He was its second president from 1851 to 1865.
