Andrew Murray Sr. (1794–1866), a Dutch Reformed Church missionary sent to South Africa from Scotland, had him as his second child. South Africa’s Graaff Reinet is where he was born. Maria Susanna Stegmann, his mother, was German Lutheran and French Huguenot.
Murray and his older brother, John, were transferred to the University of Aberdeen in Scotland for their early schooling. They both stayed there until 1845, when they earned their master’s degrees. During this period, they were impacted by the ministry of William Burns, Horatius Bonar, and Robert Murray McCheyne as well as Scottish revival meetings.
