Misconceptions about the Holy Spirit as a mystical force or impersonal power are dispelled by the Bible’s unmistakable identification of Him as God. Acts 5:3–4 makes it clear that lying to the Holy Spirit is equivalent to lying to God.

Moreover, the Holy Spirit has divine qualities that are inherent to God, such as omnipresence, which is demonstrated in Psalm 139:7-8, and omniscience, which is demonstrated in 1 Corinthians 2:10–11, where the Spirit is revealed to be aware of God’s innermost thoughts.

In addition to being divine, the Holy Spirit is shown to be a unique divine person with the traits of personhood, including a will, emotions, and a mind. The Holy Spirit can grieve (Ephesians 4:30), thinks and knows (1 Corinthians 2:10), intercedes on behalf of Christians (Romans 8:26–27), and makes choices based on His own will (1 Corinthians 12:7–11). Consequently, the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, completely God, and able to carry out Jesus’ promise to be the Comforter and Counselor. He is not merely a part of God’s power.
