Following the appointment of a homose*ual bishop as its archbishop, the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) formally severed its relationship with the Church in Wales.
Bishop Cherry Vann, who is in a same-s*x civil union, was named the new Archbishop of the Church in Wales, which sparked the debate. Conservative Anglican churches worldwide, particularly in Africa, have criticized this.
The Nigerian church said in a statement this week that the decision was taken to safeguard the Anglican faith’s scriptural beliefs.
Church leaders have voiced their extreme disapproval of the Church in Wales’ current course, describing it as inappropriate and unbiblical.
The Nigerian church said that it will no longer acknowledge the Church in Wales’ authority or maintain any connection with it. It further stated that it is still dedicated to maintaining traditional Christian beliefs regarding marriage and se*uality.
In response to the appointment of a lesbian bishop by the Church in Wales, the Most Rev. Henry C. Ndukuba stated:
“We reject the election of the Right Reverend Cherry Vann as the Archbishop of Wales.”
“Just as the Church of Nigeria took steps after the election of Gene Robinson in the United States, we are severing every tie and relationship with the Church of Wales,” he said.
