OHEMAA MERCY BIOGRAPHY

Mercy Amoah popularly known as Ohemaa Mercy is a Ghanaian Gospel music minister and songwriter. She was born on the 7th of September 1977 and has received multiple awards both in Ghana and overseas.

EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND

She was born in Weija, Accra to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Amoah. She lived her early days in Koforidua. Mercy attended St. Peter’s Anglican Primary School, Koforidua for her primary education and the secondary education at Ghana Secondary School. She obtained a Teachers Certificate “A” at S.D.A Teachers Training College, Asokore, Koforidua.

MINISTRY

Her first album was released in November 2004 and it was titled “Adamfo Papa”. The album was a hit as it received a massive welcome and it brought Mercy to the limelight.

Mercy’s fame was recognized to the point that she won seven nominations for the 2006 Ghana Music Awards however, she did not win any of the seven awards. Later that year, she won the Discovery of the Year for the Gospel Music Awards.

She released her second album in the year 2007 titled “Edin Jesus”. The album ranked the best selling for the year as she sold 875,000 copies after six months of releasing it. The album won her eight nominations for the 2008 Ghana Music Awards. The highest number of nominations in the history of the event. She won three out of the eight awards. The three are:

• Gospel Artiste of the Year
• Album of the Year
• Gospel Album of the Year

Also in 2008, she won a grand medal in the National Honours Awards from the former president of Ghana, John Kufuor.

Mercy never rested on her laurel as she released her third album titled “Wobɛyɛ Kɛse” in 2010/11. The song like the previous ones won her four nominations at the 2014 Ghana Music Awards. The song was best-selling and was at the top of all major charts in Ghana.

She has performed on big stages with exciting performances and also shared the stage with big names in the Gospel Music Industry. Names such as Israel Houston, Don Moen, Darwin Hobbs, Andrae Crouch, Kirk Franklin, and many others.

In 2014, Mercy won the Gospel Artiste of the Year in Ghana and also Gospel Artiste of the Year, Canada. She received a nomination as the Best Female Artiste West Africa for the Gospel Music Awards, London.

She entered the Gospel Music Industry in 2004 with a clear vision of what she desires to achieve. The visions are:

• To encourage and to bring hope to the down-hearted through music and her personal life.
• To evangelize through her songs.
• To change the mindset of citizens that there is hope for everyone and there is hope for Ghana and Africa.
• To provide support for the poor in the society through her foundation.
• To support music excellence among gospel artists in Ghana and to inspire the youth of Africa.
• To help reform prison inmates through prison ministry.
