Wardell American professional basketball player Stephen Curry II (born March 14, 1988), better known by his stage name Steph Curry, is a point guard for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is known by his nickname “Chef Curry” and is considered the best shooter in basketball history. He is recognized for having revolutionized the game by making the three-point shot popular at all levels of the sport.
Among his many accolades are four NBA titles, two NBA MVP awards, an NBA Finals MVP, and two NBA All-Star Game MVP awards. In addition, he has won two NBA scoring titles, been selected to the NBA All-Star team eleven times, and been selected to the First Team four times. As a member of the U.S. national team, he has won two gold medals at the FIBA World Cup and one at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Stephen Curry was twice voted Conference Player of the Year while playing for the Davidson Wildcats in college. He topped the NCAA Division I in scoring in his junior year and established the NCAA single-season record for three-pointers made (162) in his sophomore year. He has led the NBA in three-pointers made a record eight times and has the highest career free-throw percentage (.911) in the league’s history. Dell Curry, a professional basketball player, and Sonya (née Adams) welcomed Stephen Curry into the world on March 14, 1988, at the Akron General Medical Center in Akron, Ohio. He was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, where his father played for the Charlotte Hornets for the most of his NBA career. On their Charlotte backyard basketball court, he and his younger brother Seth played. with a short time, the family relocated to Toronto, where Dell played his final games with the Toronto Raptors. Curry aspired to play collegiate basketball for the Hokies because of his father’s legendary career at Virginia Tech, but his thin 160-pound frame only earned him a walk-on slot. After being actively recruited by Davidson College since the ninth grade, he finally decided to enroll there.

At a Davidson alumni luncheon, head coach Bob McKillop lauded Stephen Curry before he had participated in his first Wildcats game, adding, “Wait ’til you see Steph Curry.” He is unique. Stephen Curry broke Keydren Clark’s NCAA freshman season three-point shooting record on March 2 when he made his 113th three-point field goal of the year against Furman in the Southern Conference tournament semi-finals. He scored a game-high 30 points in a defeat to Maryland in the first round of the NCAA tournament on March 15.
He was chosen for the SoCon All-tournament team, All-freshman team, and All-SoCon First Team at the conclusion of his rookie campaign. Stephen Curry averaged 28.6 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.5 steals in his final season at Davidson. He was selected as a consensus first team All-American and won the NCAA scoring championship. Curry stated his commitment to finish his degree even though he chose to forego his final year at Davidson in order to enter the 2009 NBA draft.
He finished his studies and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in May 2022. On August 31, 2022, Curry was inducted into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame and became the first Davidson graduate to have his jersey number retired.
Stephen Curry will be Davidson’s deputy general manager for basketball programs, with former player Matt Berman serving as an advisor, the school said in March 2025.
