He was a Christian missionary and the director of the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, England. He was one of the founders of the Plymouth Brethren movement. During the break, his group was subsequently known as the Open Brethren.
He cared for 10,024 orphans and gave them access to education during his lifetime; some even accused him of elevating the poor above their rightful position in British society. He established 117 schools that provided Christian education to over 120,000 individuals.
