Lindsay was born in Zion, Illinois, and her parents were adherents of American healing revivalism founder John Alexander Dowie. Charles Fox Parham, who was influenced by John G. Lake, persuaded the little boy to Pentecostalism when the family moved to Portland, Oregon. At the age of 18, he began his career as a traveling evangelist, hosting events at the Assembly of God, British Israelite churches, and Pentecostal groups. By 1940, he was organizing important convention events, like the meetings of the Anglo-Saxon World Federation in Vancouver.
