He was the second child of Dutch Reformed Church missionary Andrew Murray Sr. (1794–1866), who was sent from Scotland to South Africa. He was born in Graaff Reinet, South Africa. His mother, Maria Susanna Stegmann, was a French Huguenot and German Lutheran.
For their early education, Murray and his older brother, John, were sent to the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Both of them remained there until they graduated with master’s degrees in 1845.
They were influenced by Scottish revival gatherings and the ministry of Robert Murray McCheyne, Horatius Bonar, and William Burns during this time.
