Born in Königsberg, East Prussia, Germany, on April 19, 1940, Reinhard Bonnke was the fifth son of Hermann Bonnke, an army logistics officer in the Reichswehr who fought on the Eastern Front. The missionary Luis Graf cured his paternal grandfather, August Bonnke, of an unknown sickness in 1922. Bonnke operated a windmill in Trunz, East Prussia (now Milejewo, Poland). But in 1945, he died during the evacuation of East Prussia.
His mother was Metaa Bonnke (née Scheffler). Bonnke had six siblings: Martin, Gerhard, Jurgen, Peter, Felicitas, his only younger sibling, and his only sister.
