On July 4, 2025, a terrible flash flood struck Camp Mystic, a 99-year-old Christian girls’ summer camp in the Texas Hill Country, killing 27 girls and counselors.
The camp, situated in Kerr County beside the Guadalupe River, was taken aback by how quickly the river’s waters rose—in only forty-five minutes, they rose 26 to 29 feet. When the tragedy occurred, at than 750 girls, ages 7 to 17, as well as staff were there.
It was also stated that nearly 20 girls were reported missing, however the number was ultimately reduced to 10 campers and one counselor still unaccounted for.
Helicopters, drones, and boats were used in the rescue operation, with assistance from National Guard forces and the Texas Department of Emergency Management.
In a statement, the camp expressed their sorrow and offered prayers for the impacted families. They stated;
“Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly.”
Dick Eastland, the director of Camp Mystic, was one of the people killed by the flooding; it has been said that he passed away while attempting to rescue the lives of some of the camp’s girls.
Staff at Camp Mystic have requested for prayers, privacy, and respect for all impacted families.
