Nigerian singer, songwriter, and senior worship leader Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, better known by his stage name Sinach, has had a three-decade impact on the gospel music landscape worldwide. Early Life
Sinach, the second of seven children, is from Ebonyi State in Eastern Nigeria. She had aspirations of singing in front of big crowds since she was a young child, and one day she would realize her goal. She didn’t initially pursue music professionally, even though she enjoyed singing for family and friends starting in 1989 and was a staff member and choir member at Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s Church.
Rather, she concentrated on her studies, graduating from the University of Port Harcourt with a degree in physics. Before releasing her first album, she wrote a number of songs, such as “This Is Your Season,” which was named Song of the Year that year and hinted at the countless honors she would get. She purposefully chose the name “Sinach,” which is a condensed and easily pronounced form of her given name Osinachi, in order to reach a larger audience.
It would be impossible to describe Sinach’s career without bringing up “Way Maker.” This song was released in 2015 and has since become a global sensation, overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers to become an anthem of faith and hope. With more than 60 Christian musicians covering the song in different languages, such as Michael W. Smith, Darlene Zschech, and Bethel Music, its effect is astounding. Its worldwide impact is further cemented by the fact that the music video for “Way Maker” is among the most viewed Nigerian music videos on YouTube.
“Way Maker” became a source of solace and motivation during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and videos of people singing the song in public places and hospitals went viral. The song’s success on the Christian Copyright Licensing International charts, where it topped the charts for several months in 2020, solidified its position as the most played song in churches in the United States that year. “Way Maker” has received three nominations and won Song of the Year at the 51st GMA Dove Awards, which is a significant accomplishment for a Nigerian artist, as well as the BMI Song of the Year award.
Marital Status
Sinach’s personal life is as founded in faith as her professional life. In 2014, she married Joseph Egbu in her home church, Christ Embassy. At the LIMA Awards, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome joyfully announced the couple’s first child, Rhoda, was born in 2019.
Philanthropist
Sinach is dedicated to giving back to their community, as is her spouse. They founded the Joseph and Sinach Foundation with the goal of helping individuals in need by offering healthcare and other vital services. As a sign of their dedication to improving society, they conducted their first medical outreach in Abia State, Nigeria, in partnership with Emzor Pharmaceuticals and the State Government, offering 700 people free treatment.
