Journalists for Christ International Outreach has offered methods for lowering tech-facilitated gender-based violence in Nigeria as part of its own commemoration of International Women’s Day 2025, which is marked today globally.
JFC’s latest social media trend monitoring, according to Otufodunrin, found a significant number of cases of tech-enabled gender-based violence against women and unwarranted sexist remarks.
JFC’s investigation, supported by the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) and the German Protestant Agency for Diaconia, Bread for The World, found that attacks against women online are increasing.
Otufodunrin claims that women are being attacked online. breaks them and aims to reduce their involvement and contribution to society, among other negative outcomes. and numerous more consequences.
To reverse this trend, the president of the JFC called on the media and other stakeholders to educate the public, join in online support groups, and increase awareness about the need to stop attacks on women.
He also emphasized the importance of supporting victims of gender-based violence and opposing misogyny when it is seen.
He believes that men who understand the issue should be active in teaching children the value of women and responsibility.
Additionally, he stated that “the campaign to stop the trend should involve religious leaders and community organizations.” Family values need to be reoriented, and the misreading of religious texts needs to be addressed.
Counter-narratives should be developed, and women should be urged to unite and support one another. Encourage and support laws that forbid online gender-based abuse. Use a multipronged approach and spread the word about the detrimental impacts of online misogyny.
He called on the media to adopt acceptable social media habits and collaborate with other organizations to promote awareness in order to prevent attacks on women both online and offline.
“More media coverage of the issue and the need to encourage storytelling to educate people” was another suggestion made by Otufodunrin. For coordinated activities on the issues, create networks and include other stakeholders.
