We have also put together lists of the books on Hearing God’s Voice that a believer must read along the way. One of the greatest desires of man is to hear God’s voice. We are all made with a desire to communicate with God. The Bible says that in these last days many voices will deceive even the most devoted. Jesus, in John 10:27–28, promises us that if we are His sheep we shall hear His voice. This means God wants to speak to us. God loves to speak to His children. Revelation 3:20 says, “Behold I stand at the door and knock.” If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and have dinner with him.
This is just a position of capitulation. The quickest route to harden the arteries of your spiritual heart is to walk in defiance. As the author of Hebrews 3:7-8 states, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Like a radio receiver we must listen to the Holy Spirit’s signal. God is like the radio wave—consistent and unchanging. It is a pleasure and a joy to a believer to hear the voice of God. It can save you thousands of dollars. It can lead you in heavenly ways. It can protect you. It can inspire you to carry on.
After one of his greatest victories, Elijah flees from Queen Jezebel in 1 Kings 9:12. He had just finished a mission as an intermediary between his God, Jehovah, and the prophets of Baal. The day God came down in power and fire to consume his offering was certainly the pinnacle of his life. Our greatest vulnerability is often after our encounters with God on the mountain tops. He was on the queen’s most wanted list for killing her prophets now that the anointing he was getting on the mountain was over. He runs in fear, and he wants to hear from the all-powerful God who set him apart on Mount Carmel.
