Books On Biblical Archaeology PDF. Biblical studies and Levantine archaeology are subsets of Biblical archaeology, which is an academic field. Biblical archaeology is the study of ancient Near Eastern archaeological sites, with a focus on the Holy Land (also called the Land of Israel and Canaan) during biblical times.

The field of biblical archaeology was founded in the late 1800s by American and British archaeologists who wanted to verify the Bible’s historical accuracy. Biblical archaeology emerged as the predominant American school of Levantine archaeology between the 1920s, immediately following World War I, when Palestine was under British authority, and the 1960s, under the direction of individuals like G. Ernest Wright and William F. Albright. Theologians oversaw the effort, which was mostly sponsored by churches.

Biblical archaeology was affected by processual archaeology, or “New Archaeology,” starting in the late 1960s, and it encountered problems that caused it to disregard the religious parts of the study. As a result, rather than attempting to support or refute the biblical narrative, American colleges now place more of an emphasis on the archaeology of the area and how it relates to the biblical text than on biblical studies.

The primary source of information on the region of Palestine is the Hebrew Bible, which primarily covers the Iron Age. For this reason, biblical historiography is unable to offer insights that archaeology can. An understanding of the people and civilizations of the Ancient Near East can be gained through a comparative analysis of the biblical text and archeological findings. While consideration is given to both the Hebrew and New Testaments, the bulk of the research is on the former.
