Books on Curses

Here is a list of some of the best books on Curses that we could find. In the Hebrew scriptures curses are normally about God’s judgments and punishments. The first curse is the curse of sin, which occurs when Adam and Eve disobey God and pay for their lack of faith. Interestingly, God doesn’t curse Adam and Eve specifically but curses the ground and the serpent (it’s the first time in the Bible that the word “curse” is used). But the curse of sin requires Adam and Eve to leave the Garden.

Blessings of God contrasted with the curses. God promises Israel if they trust and obey him he will bless them. If they worship other gods or disobey his laws he will curse them. The curse is a sign of God’s wrath and vengeance. It has nothing to do with Satan or demons, for God can certainly revenge himself for such deeds against him.

A curse in the OT is usually to swear or take an oath or to wish evil upon someone, mostly in a pagan context.

Curses of the Pagan

The pagan king Balak has hired Balaam to curse Israel, but Balaam cannot bring himself to curse Israel and ends up blessing them. This shows the pagan idea that cursing can have a supernatural bad effect.

Other pagan curses, such as the Philistines, are usually an oath to a pagan god:

“And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.” 1 Samuel 17:43

Judges 17:1–6 contains an account of idol worship that employs the term “curse” (the word “curse” appears in verse 2 and is obviously a pagan use in the context).

These are pagan perspectives and applications of curses that are typically associated with the worship of a false deity or gods and are based on the idea that one can supernaturally summon harmful outcomes on an adversary.

No one in the Bible ever used a curse successfully to harm someone or something. The only one who attempts to curse Israel is Balaam, who is somewhat compelled by God to bless Israel, to show that human attempts at power and belief in such power is subordinate to God’s might.
