According to Deuteronomy 32:4, God is just. According to the ATS Bible Dictionary (1859), God’s justice is “that essential and infinite attribute which makes his nature and his ways the perfect embodiment of equity and constitutes him the model and the guardian of equity throughout the universe.”
God governs the universe on the basis of justice and righteousness (Psalm 89:14). God cannot be anything but perfectly just. It is contrary to His eternal nature. God has never been unjust. “You have done what is right and just; you have established justice in Jacob; the King is mighty, he loves justice” (Psalm 99:4 NKJV).
All the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous (Psalm 19:9 NKJV). Adam and Eve saw the justice of God when they were punished for their transgression in Garden. Even in that judgment, however, they were shown mercy: “for the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21). For God to be Just, He must deal with sin. Scripture has many examples of God’s retribution for disobedience, such as the destruction of Ahab and Jezebel’s home, the Babylonian captivity, the plagues in Egypt, and the deluge of Noah’s day.
The cross is also an example of God’s justice. When Jesus was crucified, he bore the sins of the world (Isaiah 53:4-5). Jesus’ death satisfied or propitiated God’s justice, “God put [Christ] forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. And this was to show God’s righteousness (Romans 3:25). God could not just ignore sin . Justice demands punishment . “It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:26). This punishment for sin was placed upon Jesus Christ for our eternal good.
And, of course, God’s love and mercy were on full display at the cross, too. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8 NLT) God’s kindness and God’s justice met at the cross. God’s mercy was fully extended to all who believe. God’s justice was fully meted out to Christ. He is indeed “a just God and a Savior” (Isaiah 45:21, NKJV).
