Following reports of civilian losses from an Israeli military strike on the Holy Family Church compound in Gaza, Pope Leo XIV has conveyed his profound sadness and anguish.
The Pope expressed his sorrow at the deaths of innocent people and offered prayers for the victims, many of whom had sought refuge at the church during the continuous fighting in the area, in a statement issued by the Vatican Press Office on Saturday.
“The Holy Father is profoundly grieved by the news of the deaths that occurred at the Holy Family Church, a sacred space that has long stood as a place of refuge, peace, and prayer,” the statement read.
“He prays for the souls of the departed, for their grieving families, and for all those caught in the suffering caused by war.”
The church compound, which had been providing shelter to scores of civilians, including women and children, was severely damaged, according to reports from local church leaders and aid workers. Although precise numbers are still unknown, a number of fatalities and injuries were reported.
As the sole Catholic parish in Gaza, the Holy Family Church has long represented the presence and impact of Christianity in the area. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem is in charge of its pastoral care.
Pope Leo XIV, a clergyman, reaffirmed his demand for an immediate end to hostilities and urged all sides to put humanitarian access, communication, and peace first. True triumph is never achieved in war.
