T. D. Jakes Biography – Thomas Dexter Jakes popularly known as T. D. Jakes is an American preacher and excellent author. Jakes was born on June 9, 1957, and he is the senior pastor of The Potter’s House in the US. The ministry’s services and sermons can be accessed through The Potter’s Touch.
Early Life
Born on June 1957 in South Charleston, West Virginia, Jakes grew up in the Vandalia district in Charleston, West Virginia.
His DNA was analyzed on the PBS program African American Lives and his Y chromosome showed he is of descent from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria.
He is a proponent of sexual abstinence and makes known his stand on Good Morning America and Dr. Phil. He also commented that his view on homosexuality and LGBT rights was progressing in 2015. Later on, he stated that his words were interpreted wrongly and that he was never in support of homosexuality.
Ministry
At the age of 25 in 1982, he became the pastor of the Greater Emmanuel Temple of Faith with a congregation of ten. Jakes joined the ministry of Bishop Sherman Watkins Higher Ground Always Abounding Assemblies in 1988. He moved to South Charleston, West Virginia in 1990 and had an increase in congregation to 300 members. He went to Cross Lanes, West Virginia in 1993.
He is a film producer as well. In 1995, he founded TDJ Enterprises which produces his films and publishes his books. He started The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, in 1996. The non-denominational church is located on a 34-acre hilltop campus. The properties include a 5,000-seat auditorium, also with employees and staff offices.
Jakes went with President George W. Bush to visit the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He led the early morning prayer service at St. John’s Church in Wahington, D.C. for President Barack Obama on 20, January 2009.
Alongside Phil McGraw, Jay McGraw, and CBS Television Distribution, Jakes partnered to launch a syndicated secular talk in 2009 but it was never premiered due to economic issues within the syndicated television market.

He married Serita Jamison in 1982 and the couple have five grown children namely: Jermaine, Jamar, Sarah, Cora, and Thomas Dexter Jr.
Awards and Honours
Jakes was named among America’s Top 10 Religious Leaders by PBS Religion and Ethics Newsweekly.
He won “Best Gospel or Chorus Album in 2003 for his album A Wing and a Prayer at the 46th Grammy Awards.
