Born in Israel on December 3, 1952, Toufik Benedictus “Benny” Hinn is a Palestinian-American-Canadian televangelist best known for his frequent “Miracle Crusades”—revival gatherings or faith-healing summits that are usually held in stadiums in major cities and then broadcast on television around the world on his show, This Is Your Day.
Hinn was born in 1952 to parents of Greek, Palestinian, and Armenian ancestry who were born in Palestine in Jaffa, in the then-new state of Israel. He was raised in the Eastern Orthodox church and baptized by the patriarch of Jerusalem.
Shortly after the 1967 Arab–Israeli War (commonly referred to as “The Six-Day War”), Hinn’s family relocated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and he attended Georges Vanier Secondary School there in 1968. He never got his degree. Hinn fabricates tales in his books about his early social isolation, stuttering, being a first-class student, and his father being the mayor of Jaffa at the time of his birth.
In 1972, he proclaimed himself to be a Christian by birth. According to Hinn’s account, on December 21, 1973, he traveled from Toronto to Pittsburgh on a charter bus to witness a “miracle service” conducted by evangelist Kathryn Kuhlman.
Even though he has never met her in person, he has regularly referred to her as an influence in his life and has regularly attended her “healing services”. When asked to share his spiritual experience at Trinity Pentecostal Church in Oshawa in 1974, he said that he was cured of his stuttering.
