Books on Conflict Resolution PDF Download available for you on the platform. Conflict resolution within the body of Christ is paramount. Unresolved conflicts fester, damaging relationships and creating opportunities for the enemy to exploit. Anger, bitterness, self-pity, and envy, common culprits in church conflicts, hinder unity and grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:31; Hebrews 12:15).
The New Testament emphasizes peaceful coexistence among believers, instructing us to love one another (John 13:34; Romans 12:10), live in harmony (Romans 15:5; Hebrews 12:14), and resolve disputes (2 Corinthians 13:11).
For conflicts involving sin, Matthew 18:15-17 outlines a clear process:
- Private Confrontation: Address the issue directly with the individual.
- Involve Witnesses: If unresolved, seek the help of two or three witnesses.
- Bring to the Church: If the issue persists, bring it before the church.
Luke 17:3-4 emphasizes the importance of forgiveness, even for repeated offenses. Restoration should always be the ultimate goal.
Conflicts may arise from differing perspectives or personality clashes rather than sin. In these situations, humility is key. We must prioritize others’ interests (Philippians 2:3-4), actively listen, and seek mutual agreement. When disagreements arise regarding ministry goals, budgets, or service styles, we should engage in respectful dialogue and seek God’s wisdom (James 1:5). While parting ways may sometimes be necessary, it should never be done in anger.
Conflict resolution often requires us to step outside our comfort zones. We may be reluctant to confront others, admit our own faults, or take the necessary steps to reconcile. However, obedience to God necessitates addressing conflict, even when it’s challenging.
For minor offenses, forbearance may be appropriate (Proverbs 19:11). However, serious issues must be addressed. Peace with God and peace with others are inextricably linked (Matthew 5:23-24).
