Early Life
Smith Wigglesworth‘s early years were characterized by adversity and physical labor because he was born into poverty in rural England. Despite his modest upbringing, he had a strong trust in God from an early age. Several Christian denominations, such as Methodism, Anglicanism, and the Plymouth Brethren, had an impact on his spiritual development.
During the Sunderland Revival in 1907, Wigglesworth had a turning point in his life. Following his baptism in the Holy Spirit, he had a significant metamorphosis. His life would be shaped by his enthusiasm for healing and evangelism, which was sparked by this experience.
Ministry
Wigglesworth’s strong faith and conviction in the authority of God’s Word were hallmarks of his ministry. He was renowned for his fearless gospel-preaching and his unshakable faith in divine healing. Numerous nations were served by his ministry, including the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, and India.
Although many people admired Wigglesworth, his ideas and tactics were sometimes criticized. Others took issue with his unconventional style of prayer, which frequently featured physical contact and harsh statements. But others who supported him credited his unusual approaches to the fervor of his faith and the pressing need of his mission.
Wigglesworth was adaptable in his methods and felt that faith was the path to recovery. He advocated for a “corporate healing” in which people laid hands on themselves after the Swedish government forbade him from doing so with audience members. He also distributed “prayer handkerchiefs” (one of which was sent to King George V) and practiced anointing with oil. Wigglesworth occasionally blamed demons for poor health.
Wigglesworth primarily attributed his effectiveness as a pastor to his experience being baptized by the Holy Spirit. He stated:
“I want you to observe that someone who speaks a foreign language either elevates or edifies themselves. Before we may edify the church, we must first be edified. My own debt to the Holy Ghost technique of spiritual development is incalculable. I stand before you as one of the world’s greatest puzzles. No man on the platform was ever weaker. No language. There is a lot of inability. Everything in my life naturally runs counter to my ability to stand on the podium and share the gospel. The answer is that the Holy Ghost arrived and brought this great edifying of the Spirit. I had been reading this Word consistently as best as I could, but the Holy Ghost came and took hold of it, because the Holy Ghost is the breath of it, and He illuminated it to me.”
Wigglesworth claimed to have delivered numerous prophecies while serving as a minister in numerous churches across Yorkshire, most frequently at Bethesda Church near Swallownest (on the outskirts of Sheffield). He had a ministry to other countries as well. In addition to various European nations, he served as a minister in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, the Pacific Islands, India, and Ceylon. Two books, Ever Increasing Faith and Faith that Prevails, were compiled from some of his sermons that were transcribed for Pentecostal magazines.
He remained a minister until his passing on March 12, 1947.
