T.D Jakes Biography
Thomas Dexter Jakes Sr, was born on June 9, 1957, in South Charleston, west of Virginia.
He is a visionary Pastor, Author, and Filmmaker. He was the son of Ernest and Odith Jakes.
His mother, Odith was an Economics teacher and she makes sure three of her children learned how to do the cooking, cleaning, and sewing.
The father, Ernest had a strong entrepreneurial spirit that makes him start a cleaning business from the very small beginning to an employer of 42 staffs who did the cleaning in the area of Charleston from the West Virginia capital building to grocery stores.
The trait of an entrepreneur was seen in T.D Jakes at his young age, who was delivering newspapers and products produced from his mother’s garden.
Prior to his father’s death in 1982 of kidney disease, he spent his teenage years to care for him and at the same time working full-time at a chemical plant job with union carbide.
His young stage was a drama to many as Jakes was always found preaching to an imaginary congregation and always with his bible to school.
No one ever thought this seed in him will become a mighty one throughout the world. He himself could not have known it but it is a result of what man can do with God.
During his time working at the chemical plant in 1981, he met his wife to be Serita Ann Jamison a year before the chemical plant was closed.
The two got married in May 1982 the same year the chemical plant was closed and blessed with five children.
Jakes attended local Baptist churches while growing up where he became a part-time music director and also a part-time street evangelist.
He enrolled in West Virginia State University after realizing the call upon his life though he later dropped out and began preaching full time. T.D Jakes devoted his time to his call as an evangelist and a planter of churches in Charleston.
During his time in the university, he only took preaching as part-time but when he dropped out, he focused his attention on his ministry.
He became the Pastor of a small Independent Pentecostal church in Montgomery, West Virginia at the age of 23 in 1980.
The church started with just ten members and grew tremendously over the years drawing a composed and coordinated congregation that advanced Jakes’s fame as a Speaker and Pastor.
The church grew from 100 to over 300 members even though he moved it twice from Montgomery to Smithers and then to South Charleston. He started a radio program that runs from 1982 to 1985.
He met with Sherman Watkins, founder of the Higher Ground Always Abounding Assembly and became acquainted with him. It was Watkins that ordained T.D as a minister in the church. He calls Watkins his spiritual father.
Jakes latter completed his University education from Friends International Christian University an unaccredited online university. He obtained his B.A and M.A in 1990 and also Doctor of Ministry in Religious studies in 1995.
Following his move to Charleston in 1990, T.D Jakes began attending to the spiritual needs of the broken and wounded women in his church. He started a Sunday School Class called “Woman, Thou Art Loosed”.
Not very long, he started a class for men too, which is called “Manpower”. In 1993, he published his first book, based on his experience with women of his church. Woman, Thou Art Loosed became a religious national bestseller.
While he moved his church again in 1993 to Cross Lanes, he also started a television ministry, ”Get Ready” aired on Black Entertainment Television and the Trinity Broadcasting Network. The congregation as at this time grew to more than 1,100 people that include 60 percent of African Americans and 40 percent Caucasian.
It was in 1994 he founded “T.D Jakes Ministries” a non-profitable organization that produced sermons and conferences on television nationwide.
The program “Get Ready” was hosted weekly as a radio and television show viewed and listened to by millions in the United States and across South Africa.
Also in May 1996, T.D Jakes’s ministry increased when he and his wife with their five children and 50 member workers to Dallas, Texas and it was there Jakes founded the Potter’s House, a non-denominational megachurch.
It was located on a 34-acres hilltop campus and the church space for 5,000-seat auditorium plus other offices.
The number increased tremendously from 7,000 worshippers to 14,000 worshippers between 1996 and 1998.
T.D Jakes is currently the senior pastor The Potter’s House, which has more than 30,000 members.
Over the years, The Potter’s House hosts festivals, conferences and a revival called MegaFest.
