William Booth, an English Methodist preacher who was born on April 10, 1829, and died on August 20, 1912, was the first general of the Salvation Army (1878–1912) and co-founder with his wife, Catherine. It is one of the largest providers of aid to the poor.
Born in Sneinton, Nottingham, William Booth was the second of five children born to Samuel Booth and his second wife, Mary Moss. His birthplace is now a museum. Booth’s father was a builder and nail technician from Belper, Derbyshire, but when William was a youngster, the family went into poverty. Samuel Booth, who died on September 23, 1842, apprenticed 13-year-old William to a pawnbroker after failing to pay his son’s tuition.
