We have also put together lists of the books on Gifts of Spirit that a believer must read along the way. “Before we dive into the spiritual gifts, we will examine two Greek words used to describe the gifts of the Spirit. Charismata, points to the fact that they are given as an act of God’s grace (charis), and pneumatika, which points to their source, the Holy Spirit (pneuma) of God. The spiritual gifts are given by grace and not by our own merit or aptitude but by the sovereign will of God. The gifts are given by the Spirit of God and are part of the new life Christ has given us. They may be very different from what we thought we were capable of or desired before conversion. First Corinthians 12:4–7 teaches us that the gifts are diverse but they all come from the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are many kinds of work, but all of them are of the same God working in all of them. Now the manifestation of the Spirit is given to all for the benefit of all.” Every believer will have a unique spiritual gift, but all spiritual gifts are to be used for the glory of God and the edification of the church of Christ.
If we want to understand God’s plan for His talents better, we can look at three important texts quickly: Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; and 1 Peter 4:10-11.
One of the first things that these texts make clear is the diversity of the gifts. Paul’s list of spiritual gifts in Romans 12 is not the same as in 1 Corinthians 12. Also, when Peter speaks of spiritual gifts, in 1 Peter 4:10-11, he lists general categories of the types of gifts God gives, rather than specific examples. The Bible lists gifts like prophecy, ministry, wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, teaching, exhorting, giving, ruling, showing mercy, speaking in languages and interpreting languages. Whatever the particular purpose, each gift gets along with the others and works as a whole, just as the parts of the body (Romans 12:5).
