Books on Faith

We have also put together lists of the books on Faith that a believer must read along the way. “Faith” is one of those words that’s thrown around a lot but not always understood. Some of that confusion stems from the use of the word “faith” in everyday conversation. A quick look at Dictionary.com reveals seven different uses! The term “faith” is often used to refer to belief in something without evidence. But is that what the Bible means by faith? Not possible! So what does faith mean when the Bible uses it?

The closest thing to a definitive answer in the Bible is Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” This paragraph is here to demonstrate that confidence or trust is the vital element of faith. The Bible speaks of faith as faith in God and in his promises. Abram’s encounter with God in Genesis 15 is a prime illustration of this. So in response to God’s promise that he would have innumerable descendants, Abram “believed the LORD, and he counted it to him for righteousness” (Gen 15:6). The Apostle Paul says, “He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:20-21). So faith is believing in God and trusting him to do what he has promised to do.

Pastor John McArthur speaks on the biblical definition of faith. “Some people say faith is just believing certain truths. There is a well known Bible teacher who says that saving faith is simply believing God’s promise of eternal life.

But, as the Bible teaches, the object of faith is not the divine promise but the Person of Jesus Christ. It is faith in Him that saves, not merely knowing facts about Him or accepting His promises. Faith is not just about accepting reality. Demons have that kind of faith, too (James 2:19).
