However, it’s crucial to distinguish between two types of wisdom: godly and worldly.
First Corinthians 3:19-20 contrasts these two: “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” While worldly wisdom seeks self-gratification and worldly success, godly wisdom originates from God, honors Him, and leads to a holy life. It prioritizes eternal values over earthly ones (1 John 2:15-16) and aligns our choices with our heavenly citizenship (Philippians 1:27; 3:20).
The book of Proverbs, a treasure trove of practical wisdom, contrasts the wise with the foolish, emphasizing the importance of learning from mistakes (Proverbs 3:35; 14:24; 15:7; 26:11). Godly wisdom often defies conventional wisdom, as illustrated in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). It requires us to crucify our flesh and live by the Spirit (Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 5:16, 25).
The primary source of godly wisdom is God’s Word (Psalm 119:169). It illuminates our understanding and provides insight (Psalm 119:130). By immersing ourselves in Scripture, we cultivate a heart of worship and thanksgiving, creating fertile ground for wisdom to grow (Colossians 3:16; John 17:17).
Surrounding ourselves with wise and godly individuals is crucial (Proverbs 13:20). We should seek to emulate those who exemplify Christ-like wisdom (1 Corinthians 4:16; 11:1).
Finally, we must actively seek God’s wisdom through prayer (James 1:5). However, our request must be sincere and accompanied by faith. A double-minded person cannot expect to receive anything from the Lord (James 1:6-8).
Solomon, a man of great wisdom, provides a cautionary tale. Despite receiving divine wisdom, he ultimately forsook it for worldly pursuits, leading to his downfall (1 Kings 11:1-11).
By diligently seeking and applying godly wisdom, we can navigate life’s challenges with discernment, righteousness, and eternal perspective.
