A well-known figure in American evangelicalism, David Joseph Platt is renowned for his fervent sermons, dedication to international missions, and exhortation to live a radical, Christ-centered life. His influence on modern Christian thought and practice has been molded by his ascent and unrelenting search of biblical truth.
Early Life
David Platt was born and reared in Atlanta, Georgia, and his early years prepared him for his future work in ministry. He attended the University of Georgia to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree after becoming interested in journalism. He did, however, shift his attention to theological studies as a result of a growing spiritual conviction.
He became involved in biblical studies at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he graduated with a Master of Divinity (M.Div. ), Master of Theology (Th.M. ), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). His approach to ministry and preaching was shaped by these demanding scholarly endeavors, which gave him a strong foundation in biblical interpretation and theological understanding.
Early Ministry
Prior to joining Brook Hills, Platt developed his theological and communication abilities at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he was Assistant Professor of Expository Preaching and Apologetics and Dean of Chapel. Additionally, he worked in New Orleans’ Edgewater Baptist Church, where he witnessed the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
His parsonage’s flooding during this natural calamity served as a sobering reminder of both the worth of timeless principles and the frailty of life.
David Platt was appointed senior pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2006 at the astonishingly young age of 27. He became the youngest megachurch pastor in the US at the time of this assignment, which thrust him into the national spotlight.
A growing church responded favorably to his energetic preaching style, which was marked by a passionate call for radical discipleship and a fervent dedication to biblical interpretation. IMB
Because of his dedication to international missions, Platt accepted the position of president of the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention in 2014. He was in charge of one of the biggest missionary-sending organizations in the world in this capacity, overseeing thousands of missionaries working in various difficult situations.
A revitalized focus on biblical faithfulness, strategic alliances, and a dedication to reaching underserved people groups were hallmarks of his leadership at the IMB. He overcame difficult financial and logistical obstacles in an effort to optimize operations and increase the effectiveness of missionary work.
McLean Bible Church
Platt started working as the interim teaching pastor at McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia, in February 2017 while he was still the president of the IMB. His wish to continue teaching and leading a local congregation while carrying out his duties at the IMB was reflected in this change. By September of that year, he was installed as the permanent pastor-teacher. He left the IMB in February 2018 to concentrate on his work at McLean Bible Church.
Platt has faced difficulties during his time at McLean Bible Church. The church’s financial transparency has come under fire and been challenged in court, especially with relation to tithes and contributions to the Southern Baptist Convention. The difficulties of leadership in a cultural environment that is changing quickly have been brought to light by these conflicts, which have spurred discussions about accountability and governance within evangelical institutions.

Another well-known author is David Platt, who wrote “Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream” in 2010. This New York Times bestseller pushed readers to live a life of extreme obedience to Christ and to give up a cozy, self-centered Christianity.
