We have also put together lists of the books on Holy Ghost Baptism that a believer must read along the way. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the work of the Spirit of God whereby the believer is immersed into Christ and into the body of Christ with other believers at the moment of salvation. The baptism of the Holy Spirit was foretold by John the Baptist (Mark 1:8) and by Jesus before His ascension into heaven: “For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days” (Acts 1:5). This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) when the church was established and people were permanently indwelt by the Holy Spirit for the first time.
The key verse in the Bible on the baptism of the Holy Spirit is found in First Corinthians 12:12-13. In 1 Corinthians 12:13 we read, “For we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.” Notice that all have been baptized by the Spirit. This is the baptism that is the same as salvation, received by all believers, not a special experience for the few. Romans 6:1-4 uses similar language to 1 Corinthians to describe the believer’s status before God but does not explicitly mention the Spirit of God: “What shall we say, then? “Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?” Certainly not! How shall we live in sin now that we are dead to it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? So we were buried with him by baptism into his death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
To help us understand Spirit baptism, we need to know the following facts. First, 1 Corinthians 12:13 makes it very clear that everyone has been baptized, just as everyone has received the Spirit to drink (the indwelling of the Spirit). Secondly, nowhere in the Bible is it mentioned that believers seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit or that they are baptized with, in, or by the Spirit. That is, all who are believers have lived through this. Third, it seems that Spirit baptism is alluded to in Ephesians 4:5. If so, Spirit baptism, along with “one faith” and “one Father,” is a reality for every believer.
