A distinguished academic, he held professorships at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Though best known for the beloved children’s fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis’s prolific body of work encompasses diverse genres, including science fiction (The Space Trilogy), Christian apologetics (Mere Christianity, Miracles), and the acclaimed novel The Screwtape Letters.
Lewis’s close friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, significantly impacted his intellectual and spiritual journey. Both men were members of the Inklings, an informal literary group at Oxford University. While baptized in the Church of Ireland, Lewis experienced a period of religious skepticism during his youth. However, influenced by Tolkien and other friends, he returned to Christianity in his 30s, becoming a devout Anglican layman.
Lewis’s faith deeply influenced his writing, and his wartime radio broadcasts on Christian themes garnered widespread attention. His works, translated into numerous languages, have captivated readers worldwide. The Chronicles of Narnia remains his most popular series, adapted for stage, screen, and television.
Lewis married American writer Joy Davidman in 1956. Sadly, she passed away from cancer four years later. Lewis himself died in 1963 at the age of 64. In 2013, a memorial was dedicated to him in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey, honoring his significant contributions to literature and thought.
