Here is a list of some of the best books on Christian Unity that we could find. We’re not the only ones with these experiences. Picture what it was like for the early Christians when Jesus was crucified and his followers were, in a sense, outlawed. Consider the martyrdom of Stephen. Think of Paul’s experience in the persecution of the early church. We are not the first Christians to live in a contentious and polarizing culture.
There is a verse that has had a lot of meaning for me over the years. Acts 2:42 tells us they were devoted to prayer, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the teachings of the apostle. The Greek word used in the phrase “they devoted themselves” means “to give yourself exclusively to.” It means to focus on these and to give them priority. They were committed to the whole of the Bible, to biblical truth and the doctrine of the apostles. They pledged themselves to fellowship, reading the statement. Their use of the word “fellowship” in Greek refers to their dedication to unity, or caring for one another. Thirdly, it says they devoted themselves to the breaking of bread. That’s referring to worship in general and the Lord’s Supper in particular. Next is prayer. In Greek, it refers to the times of prayer in the day, with an emphasis on discipline of spirit. Jews prayed at night, in the morning, and at noon, according to Psalm 55. This rhythm of prayer saturated their lives. As they sought those goals, they found unity with each other and oneness in the Lord.
