The Pilgrim’s Progress, his best-known work, is a Christian narrative that also functions as an important literary model. He became interested in religion after getting married. Before joining the Bedford Meeting, a nonconformist group in St. John’s Church in Bedford, he first went to the parish church. He later became a preacher. After the monarchy was restored and the freedom of nonconformists was curtailed, Bunyan was arrested and imprisoned for the next twelve years because he would not cease preaching. During this time, he began composing The Pilgrim’s Progress, his best-known work, and Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, a spiritual autobiography.
